What are IFC Performance Standards — Brief Introduction
IFC Performance Standards are a set of internationally recognized benchmarks developed by the International Finance Corporation (IFC) to guide companies and projects in identifying, managing, and mitigating environmental and social (E&S) risks. They define expectations for companies to avoid, minimize, and manage negative impacts on people and the environment, and provide a framework for assessing E&S risks and opportunities, particularly in high-impact industries or projects receiving IFC investment.
The standards promote sustainable outcomes by ensuring responsible business practices that respect human rights, biodiversity, local communities, and labor standards.
The Eight IFC Performance Standards
- PS1: Assessment and Management of Environmental and Social Risks and Impacts
- PS2: Labor and Working Conditions
- PS3: Resource Efficiency and Pollution Prevention
- PS4: Community Health, Safety, and Security
- PS5: Land Acquisition and Involuntary Resettlement
- PS6: Biodiversity Conservation and Sustainable Management of Living Natural Resources
- PS7: Indigenous Peoples
- PS8: Cultural Heritage
These standards are widely used by IFC clients, private sector lenders, and development finance institutions globally to align project operations with best practices for sustainability, risk reduction, and stakeholder engagement.
